Ajay Vatave M.D., M.P.H. has joined Cloudburst as the new Director of Center for Public Health

Dr. Vatave has over 10 years of clinical and public health experience working in international, Federal, State and Local settings.  He has worked extensively with underserved populations throughout his career, with a topical focus in infectious disease, minority health issues and rare genetic disorders. Dr. Vatave has also developed topical expertise in broader issues within the environmental health arena, including public health consequences of climate change and the dynamics of built environment and wellness. He has extensive experience and training in quantitative data collection and assessment, strategic planning, and technical assistance.  Dr. Vatave has published his research in relevant peer reviewed journals and presented the findings of his research over the course of his career at National and International conferences. In addition Dr. Vatave has been a member or chair of a number of expert panels including the, National Advisory Council Access to Credible Genetics, the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) Newborn Screening Workgroup, Duchene Muscular Dystrophy Care Considerations Workgroup, and the National Coordinating Center Genetics and Newborn Screening Panel. He has served as a public health expert as an official grants reviewer for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Dr. Vatave worked at the CDC in several capacities. He served as the lead for the Single Gene Disorder and Disability Team at CDCs National Center for Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD). In this capacity Dr. Vatave championed the design, development and implementation of research studies related Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophy and Fragile X Syndrome. He served as the principal scientist for projects conducted by the team and was responsible for oversight of more than 10 CDC cooperative agreements. 

Dr. Vatave also served a detail in the Coordinating Center for Global Health (COGH), Office of the Director. While at COGH he worked on cross-cutting proposals for developing strategic partnerships between the CDC and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Dr. Vatave also served as CDC's Special Advisor to the Director at the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH)/ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). In this role Dr. Vatave served as a liaison between the Office of the Director and NCEH/ATSDR technical staff and contributed in the review and evaluation of high profile scientific and policy documents issued by NCEH/ATSDR.  During his time at NCEH/ATSDR, Dr. Vatave contributed to scientific and policy products focused on the potential public health implications of climate change, built environment and public health consequences, the impact of formaldehyde exposure in FEMA trailers and other toxic substance release and exposure studies.

Dr. Vatave received his M.D. from Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College, Pune India, with additional training at the VA Hospital/University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine and he received a Master's of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.
